Welcome to St Robert Southwell Catholic Primary School. We believe that a Catholic education nurtures the full potential of every young person, guiding their lifelong activities through the Spirit and presence of Christ, in service to God and others.
The role of a Catholic school is to help everyone in the school community recognise the true value and dignity of every human being. As stated in our mission statement, our learning is “giving ourselves to God; through living, loving and learning.” We strive for our pupils to develop a deep sense of wonder and pride in their faith.
Aligned with our mission, we aim to work closely with parents to foster a deeper understanding of the truths of the Catholic faith in their children. Parents are the primary educators of their child’s faith, and a strong home-school connection is vital in supporting the school’s mission. Together, we provide support to the faith community, helping to shape a Christian conscience.
Through explicit teaching about Jesus and the Church, as well as the development of prayer and worship in school, we offer daily opportunities for children to live out gospel values, respect the opinions and beliefs of others, and grow in their faith.
At the heart of our school is our Catholic mission, which shapes our identity and influences every aspect of our work. In keeping with our mission statement, we strive to work closely with parents to help children deepen their understanding of the truths of their Catholic faith.
Through the explicit teaching of Jesus and the Church, and by fostering prayer and worship within the school, we provide daily opportunities for children to live out gospel values, respect the opinions and beliefs of others, and grow in their faith.
Our curriculum is Christ-centred, and the daily life of the school is infused with activities that promote the Catholic ethos. Each classroom features a focal point designed to lead children in prayer, interact with their faith, and reflect the current learning in Religious Education. Our parish priest visits classrooms, and the children regularly attend Mass.
Religious Education is delivered using the “ To know You more clearly” scheme, which serves as a foundation for our RE teaching. Our educators go beyond this scheme, deepening the learning to foster a greater level of understanding. We focus on helping children to think theologically, ethically, and spiritually. The teaching of other faiths is also a vital aspect of our RE curriculum.
Our RE lessons encourage children to engage with scripture, make connections between different scriptural messages, and apply these lessons to their own lives, enabling them to grow in faith and understanding.
We are in a transition of introducing the year groups to the new Religious Education Directory through the scheme created by the Diocese.
The transition period is being carried out over a number of years. Academic year 2022-2023 – Early Years to begin the RED framework. Academic Year 2023-2024 – Year One and Year Six to begin the RED framework. Academic Year 2024–2025 – Year Two and Year Five begin the RED framework
The teaching follows a set of branches – one for each term.
