Performing Arts at St Robert Southwell

At St Robert Southwell Catholic Primary School, we believe that the performing arts are a powerful way for children to grow in confidence, creativity and community. From their very first term in Reception through to their final year in Year 6, pupils are offered a wealth of opportunities to perform, create and collaborate, both within school and beyond.

Performance Opportunities

Each year group contributes to the life of the school through high-quality performances and celebrations:

EYFS

Nativity play, introducing children to performing in a supportive and joyful setting.

Years 1 - 2

KS1 Nativity and choir performances.

Years 3 - 4

Christmas concerts and participation in the KS2 choir.

Years 5 - 6

End-of-year production, choir, and opportunities for solo or ensemble performance.

KS2

Liturgical celebrations, assemblies, and performance choir events at local venues.

Children experience every element of theatre and performance, whether it be acting, singing, dancing, public speaking, or working behind the scenes with props, set design, costumes, lighting or sound.

Developing Skills and Confidence

Many of our pupils begin their journey with little or no experience of the performing arts. Through our carefully planned, progressive approach, supported by experienced and creative staff, pupils grow in confidence, uncover hidden talents and develop lifelong skills.

Performance teaches children to:

  • Collaborate effectively with others.
  • Solve problems with creativity and resilience.
  • Show empathy, tolerance and social awareness.
  • Communicate with clarity and expression.
  • Embrace challenge, take risks and learn from setbacks.

These are skills that extend far beyond the stage, enriching pupils’ learning across the curriculum and preparing them for success at secondary school and in future life.

Cultural and Enrichment Opportunities

We believe it is important that children not only perform but also experience live theatre. Pupils at St Robert Southwell have enjoyed visits to productions such as:

  • KS2The Lion King (Lyceum Theatre), performances by local secondary schools.

Every Christmas, we also welcome a travelling pantomime company into school, giving all pupils the chance to experience the magic of theatre first-hand.

Expertise and Partnerships

We are blessed with a talented and dedicated staff team, many of whom bring their own experience in musical theatre, dance, music, art, design and costume-making into school life. Their expertise enriches our curriculum and ensures children receive authentic, high-quality guidance.

At St Robert Southwell, the performing arts are for everyone. They are a celebration of talent, teamwork and joy, rooted in our Catholic ethos and our mission to nurture the God-given potential of every child.
