What are the Protected Characteristics?

At St Robert Southwell Catholic Primary School, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every child is treated with respect, dignity and kindness, regardless of their background, identity or personal characteristics. Rooted in our Catholic ethos, we believe that each child is a unique creation of God, infinitely precious and deserving of love.

Our approach to teaching about the protected characteristics under UK law is carefully embedded across the curriculum. This ensures that children not only gain knowledge and understanding, but also develop the empathy, compassion and moral courage to celebrate difference and challenge injustice. We want every child to feel a deep sense of belonging within our school family and to help create a culture of respect that extends far beyond the classroom.

Learning Through the Curriculum

Throughout the curriculum, pupils are introduced to the rich diversity of human experiences. Themes such as:

  • Gender equality
  • Disability awareness
  • Racial and cultural diversity
  • Family structures and identities

are explored with sensitivity and depth. Lessons provide opportunities for children to learn about justice, fairness and inclusion, while encouraging them to reflect on how their own choices and actions can uphold the dignity of others.

We also ensure that diversity is celebrated positively. From literature that introduces children to voices from different cultures, to history that highlights global perspectives, to art, music and collective worship that reflect the richness of our world, pupils are constantly reminded of the beauty of God’s creation in all its variety.

Guided by Faith

Our Catholic identity is central to this work. We use the Gospel as our foundation, teaching children that:

Love your neighbour as yourself.

This call to love underpins every relationship in our school. It teaches pupils that treating others with kindness, respect and compassion is not optional but essential. In this way, our approach to equality and diversity is not simply a legal requirement—it is a living expression of our faith.

Beyond the Classroom

We want our pupils to leave St Robert Southwell with more than academic knowledge. We aim to nurture compassionate, open-minded individuals who:

  • Stand up for what is right, even when it is difficult.
  • Show empathy towards those who are marginalised or excluded.
  • Celebrate difference as a strength, not a barrier.
  • Contribute positively to their communities and society.

By placing Gospel values at the centre of our teaching on equality, diversity and inclusion, we prepare our children not only to thrive in modern Britain but also to live out their vocation as followers of Christ—committed to justice, peace and the common good.
