Learning Mentor

Mrs Suzanne Lanaway is Our Learning Mentor

The role of our Learning Mentor at St Robert Southwell

Our trained Learning Mentor works alongside teachers, parents, carers and others in supporting and encouraging children to overcome non–academic barriers to learning and help them reach their potential.  This work is usually on a one to one basis and is always planned to meet the needs of each individual child. The sessions are provided regularly until they have overcome their problems. The Learning Mentor also checks in with pupils after the completion of their sessions to monitor their well-being and ensure they are ready to learn.

Referrals for this valuable programme should be made through the Class Teacher, SENCo or Headteacher.

Areas of support include:

Punctuality and absence, bullying, challenging behaviour, abuse, bereavement, difficulties at home, anger management, confidence and self-esteem issues, anxiety, social and communication skills and emotional problems.

Most importantly, the Learning Mentor is a professional friend to both the child and their parents or carers.

Communication between home and school is vitally important; our Learning Mentor will support parents and carers in building an effective relationship with the school.  The Learning Mentor is available to see Parents or carers of children under her care on Mondays and Wednesdays between 3pm and 4pm.  Please contact the school office to book in for a meeting or write directly to the Learning Mentor.
